2010 South Africa World Cup

The World Cup in 2010 was in South Africa. Since I had lived in Africa before and it had been over 15 years since I had been on a safari I thought it would be great to attend the world cup and do a safari afterwards in Botswana. That trip is in a different post under the Pre-2020 Travels section. My brother Alan was able to join me on this trip and the safari.

Cape Town

South Africa World Cup: England 0 – Algeria 0

Road Trip

We sold our extra England match tickets to a doctor from the UK and he became a great travel companion for the rest of our stay in Cape Town.

Portugal 7 – North Korea 0

Johannesburg

We moved to Johannesburg for the last two matches. The first night we stayed in a pretty sparse youth hostel.

Germany 1 – Ghana 0

Watching the epic US-Algeria match in a bar before making a mad dash in a taxi to make it to the Germany-Ghana match.

The Ghana fans were amazing in their costumes, especially the ones with fire on their heads.

Yes, there are flames coming out of the bowl on his head!

South Africa World Cup: Slovakia 3 – Italy 2

We were Italian fans and it was a disppointing result against Slovakia. For the first time in a long time Italy didn’t advance past the group stage.
