The Mexican Pipeline

Puerto Escondido is known as the Mexican Pipeline because a few times a year huge swells can come in to the Zicatela beach area. It’s one of the top big wave surf spots in the world. This really nice tutorial from Surfline explains it really well: https://www.surfline.com/surf-news/mechanics-puerto-escondido-mexican-pipeline-biggest-surf-barrel/83402

All week long my Mexican surf instructors were telling me that Friday would be epic. Multiple people told me big wave surfers were flying in from around the world all week ahead of the swell. Well, this morning it came. Even the beach us beginners surf out of when the waves elsewhere were large, Carrizalillo, was too big for today. So I woke up early this morning and instead of surfing, headed down to Zicatela to watch the show. As you can see from the pictures and videos below, it did not disappoint.

A lot of the really good locals (including a couple of my instructors) who can’t afford the gear for big wave surfing, body board them instead.
Even getting a tow out on a jet ski is an adventure in the intense whitewater near the shore.
They just keep coming in!!
