A Short Day in Guanajuato

Many people consider Guanajuato the most beautiful city in Mexico. While it’s hard for me to rank any of the colonial cities I’ve seen in Mexico on their beauty – they all have their unique charms – I can see why people think they way they do about Guanajuato. It’s a wonderful Spanish city cascading down steep hills about 90 minutes away from San Miguel de Allende. For centuries the town was the wealthiest in Mexico as its mines produced a huge amount of the gold and silver that was the foundation of the Spanish empire. The minerals needed to be mined from the hills, so the town was carved into the hills. Even Pope Benedict XVI chose this as one of the two Mexican cities he visited in 2012.

So I took a nice relaxing day trip to the city yesterday, and took a lot of pictures. I probably could have easily spent another day or two there.
