More Cenote Diving: Eerie Angelita and Ancient Aktun-Ha

Angelita Cenote

We had a chance to dive to two cenotes today. The first was Angelita. It was incredibly eerie. We dove to about 110 feet and swam above a cloud of hydrogen sulfate. The cenote actually goes down another 100 feet below that cloud. As you can see from the videos below it was a very unique experience, almost like being on the set of an underwater horror movie.

It was light enough that I was able to use my GoPro to film the dive.

The surface of the cenote is really peaceful. And our dive instructor was motioning me to hide the camera, since there are large fees to use cameras in the cenote!

Aktun-Ha Cenote

Our second dive was about 20 minutes away at the Aktun-Ha cenote. It was a beautiful shallow dive. The historic highlight was seeing human bones, ceramics and burnt wood from the ice age when this area was caves above water. These remains are over 7,000 years old!

My GoPro got messed up and didn’t work on this dive. I used a couple of stock photos off the internet and pictures one of my dive buddies sent me to provide the visuals of the experience.
