Releasing Baby Sea Turtles in Puerto Escondido

Sunday we went to a beach near Puerto Escondido to release baby sea turtles. It was a wonderful experience.

Apparently every 28 days, based on the lunar cycle, mother sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand on beaches just past the water line. These eggs are at risk from dogs, humans and other creatures as well as increasing sand temperatures from global warming. There are a series of hatcheries up the coast from Puerto where volunteers dig out the eggs and hatch them in safe places. They then allow people to come by near sunset to release the baby hatched turtles into the water.  We all pay the equivalent of $5 for the experience which helps fund their operations. As you can see from the pictures below, it was definitely worth the price.

They give us the turtle in a bowl because the oils and other things on our hands could harm these newly hatched turtles.
