The Underwater Wonderland of Roatan

Roatan is an island in Honduras. It’s known for world class diving, and so that’s what I did there. I spent 7 straight mornings peacefully floating amongst really nice coral formations. It may have been the most relaxing continuous diving I’ve ever done. Primarily for the wonderful scenary, but also because all this diving was within a 15 minute boat ride of the primary dock in West End or a second dock at the southern part of the island (which itself was only a 15 minute drive away). So everything was just really easy here.

Since coral is at risk in most places with the sea tempatures rising, there are a lot of videos here as a bit of a legacy, just in case coral in this area is ever really threatened. There’s also a nice, eary 110 foot cargo ship wreck.

We were at a depth of over 100 feet, which is why my dive computer kept beeping
Lionfish are an invasive species throughout the Caribbean. Our guide speared this one and left it out for this opportunistic hunter.

Below are some pictures of my flight to Roatan, the West End area where I was staying, my Airbnb, and an unfortunate encounter I had with a local dog.

I stayed in an a large, amazing Airbnb apartment at the end of a dirt road near the West End village

The dirt road to the apartment. It rained a lot when I was there and I spent a lot of time dodging the puddles as I walked. I also used a headlamp at night; there were no lights there.
The small hill at the end of the road leading to the apartment.

My first night I was walking down the dark path with my headlight when I saw a dog’s eyes and then its owner walking behind it. I said hi to the owner as I walked past them. Then I heard something behind and felt a sharp sting as the dog bit the back of my leg. I yelled, cursed and stomped my legs. The owner said nothing. No apology and no yelling at the dog. When I told one of my Airbnb hosts, he immediately took me to the dog, yelled at it and let me know I was with him. I’ve never seen a guiltier looking dog. Apparently that dog has bit a couple of his friends, but I was the first guest. He said all I had to do in the future was say it’s name and it wouldn’t bother me. Unfortunately, I had to walk by its owners house every day I went to and from my Airbnb. Fortunately, I never had a problem after that.

A couple of days later I saw it attack a local man who was just picking up coconuts on the side of the road near the house the dog was at. The picture below is the aftermath. He got bit much worse than me. The dog broke my skin, but there was no bleeding.

My host’s mother is based in Miami and she was going to talk to her attorney about what could be done. I had sent her this picture. I’m not sure what she could really do. I just hope no other guests get bit in the future.
