And Along Came Hurricane Zeta

There’s a movie with Brad Pitt called World War Z about a zombie apocalypse. It looks like we have our own World War Z staring hurricane Zeta about a hurricane apocalypse. This is now the 5th hurricane or tropical storm that I’ve been affected by in my time here.

I was supposed to go swim with whale sharks in late August. We were threatened by hurricane Laura and so the trip was postponed. Laura went north and we just got a few hours of really heavy rain. A few days later hurricane Marco threatened us. Again, the whale sharks trip was postponed. Just over 3 weeks ago we had both tropical storm Gamma and hurricane Delta within a few days of each other. Now we’re getting a visit from Zeta.

The wind gusts were over 100mph when it did hit us.
On its way.

Zeta came ashore as a category 1 hurricane and went right through us. The winds started in the afternoon and really got cranking around 8pm.

The wind was already picking up at 5pm.
And getting worse an hour later.
The view at 8pm.
And another view at 8pm.
Horizontal rain at 9pm.

The power went out about an hour later. While the winds were extremely strong, they didn’t rattle some of my windows as strong as Delta. The challenge was, while Delta went through us 2.5 hours, Zeta meandered through over about a 9 hour period.

The eye of Zeta (sounds like the next Avengers movie) passed over us around 11pm. Things got calm and, since I was now a hurricane veteran, I went to sleep around 11:30 Monday night. I actually slept through most of the back end of the hurricane as the eye passed and the rest of the storm came through.

The next morning, Tuesday, the power was still out through most of the city and there were a lot of trees and leaves all over the streets.

A nearby street the next day.
And still some wind residue the next day.

The only hardship we had was that our power wasn’t restored until about 1pm today. That also meant we had no water this morning. The water is pumped from a cistern under our building to one on our roof. With no power, no water got pumped up and the rooftop cistern ran out this morning. A couple of friends did offer to let me use their shower this afternoon, but that kindness ended up not being needed.

When the going gets tough, the tough go paddleboarding!

And just think a couple of days before that we were playing volleyball on the beach!

I’m hiding behind the tall guy on the far left..lol!
Post volleyball drinks.
