I had a chance to experience my first cenote dive last weekend. Cenotes are fresh water pools that are dispersed all throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. My dive was in the Suceo Casa Cenote down the coast near Tulum. It was a unique cenote because it emptied out into a tunnel below a road into the ocean, so there was a mix of fresh and salt water. You could see where the clear fresh water merged into the more brackish salt water and the visibility could go from spectacular to almost non-existent in a few meters.
The other unique aspect of Suceo Casa is Poncho, the 7 foot female crocodile that’s made her home there the past few years. People dive, snorkel, swim and paddle board there and she doesn’t appear to bother anyone and no one (obviously!) bothers her.
